Hollow Knight

A metroidvania about a small knight exploring the ruined insect kingdom of Hallownest.

Team Cherry · 25–40 hrs

Difficulty

A dense Metroidvania where geo, charms, and a few key items (Lantern, Mothwing Cloak, Mantis Claw, Crystal Heart) are the map. The dream bosses and Godhome are the catalog after the Hollow Knight himself.

Tips

  • Start here

    Lumafly Lantern before Darkwood

Buy the Lantern from Sly as soon as you have the geo. Crystal Peak, the Forgotten Crossroads dark room, and several stag stations are not optional without it. Don't over-buy charms from Sly until the Lantern is yours.

  • Start here

    Stags are the fast travel

Open every stag station you walk past; the geo cost is the cheapest backtrack in the game. Bench before a boss even if the runback looks short. It isn't.

  • Advanced

Charms are a loadout, not a collection

Fury of the Fallen plus Grubberfly's Elegy is a low-HP build. Shaman Stone is the spell build. Don't leave Fragile Strength on for a boss you expect to die to; the repair trip to Divine/Leg Eater is a bigger loss than the notch.

  • Advanced

    Shade Soul and Crystal Dash

Upgrade Vengeful Spirit at the Ancestral Mound after the extra soul. Crystal Heart (super dash) from the Peak is a movement item that also skips half of later rooms. Isma's Tear is the acid swim; it's on the way to the Fungal/Royal Waterways loop.

  • Secrets

    Grimm Troupe at Howling Cliffs

Dream-nail the corpse in Howling Cliffs and light the lantern to start the Grimm Troupe. Pale Ore is the nail-upgrade gate; there are six, and the one in Crystal Peak's grub room is the one people miss.

  • Secrets

    Dream Nail the whispering roots

Whispering roots and dream warriors are essence for the Seer, who gives the Pale Ore and the Awoken Dream Nail. The hidden Grub in Crystal Peak and the one behind a breakable wall in the Crossroads are easy to leave in the ground.

  • Bosses

    Hornet, Soul Master, NKG

Hornet in Greenpath punishes jump-ins; stay grounded and punish the dash. Soul Master: heal on the stagger, not in the orb rain. Nightmare King Grimm: stand in the gap of the pufferfish fireballs; the rest is a dash-through exam.

  • Bosses

    Radiance wants Abyss Shriek

The True Ending path (Void Heart, then Dream Nail the Hollow Knight while Hornet holds him) is a platforming fight. Sharp Shadow and Abyss Shriek are the honest kit; don't learn it on a nail-only charm page.
