Metroid Dread

A side-scrolling action game about Samus exploring planet ZDR while robotic hunters pursue her.

MercurySteam · Nintendo · 8–12 hrs

Difficulty

A 2D Metroid that uses the melee counter as an i-frame and E.M.M.I. zones as stealth puzzles until you steal their Omega Cannon. Sequence breaks exist; the intended path still wants every missile expansion you walk past.

Tips

  • Start here

    Counter is invincible

The melee counter's freeze is your i-frame. Slide under shots, counter the lunge, then dump missiles into the opened eye. Running from an E.M.M.I. is a walk until the red chase starts.

  • Start here

    Don't skip the map stations

ZDR's rooms hide missile tanks behind bomb blocks the map paints as empty. Fill the local map before you leave a region; backtracking without Flash Shift is the long way.

  • Advanced

Flash Shift is a dodge and a skip

Three Flash Shift charges chain through boss telegraphs that look like they need a counter. Shine spark from a spin jump stores a speed-booster launch you can dump straight up for sequence breaks.

  • Advanced

Storm Missiles tag the weak point

Lock a Storm Missile volley onto a boss part, then counter; the volley lands during the freeze. Super Missiles are for doors and armor, not for every small enemy.

  • Secrets

    Omega Cannon is borrowed

Down an E.M.M.I. and the Omega Blaster is yours only inside that zone. Use it on the core, then leave; the next E.M.M.I. is a new stealth read, not a gun you keep.

  • Bosses

Raven Beak is a counter exam

Counter the grab, Flash Shift the dash, and save Hyper Beam for the last phase when the fight stops pretending to be fair. Experiment Z-57 is an eyeball fight: stay on the ice, not in the water.
