The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

An action-adventure about young Link growing up and traveling time to stop Ganondorf.

Nintendo EAD · Nintendo · 20–30 hrs

Difficulty

The 3D Zelda template: child/adult split, dungeon items as keys, and a trading quest that hides the Biggoron Sword. Gold Skulltulas and the Song of Storms well are still the upgrades a first run forgets.

Tips

  • Start here

    Get a bottle before Dodongo

The Kakariko cucco lady gives a bottle for her return trip. Bugs in a bottle clone Gold Skulltulas on the right walls, and a bottled fairy is the only continue the Water Temple will respect.

  • Start here

Z-target is the lock, not the fight

Hold Z to strafe, then release to run around a wolfos or a Stalfos. Iron Boots from the Ice Cavern belong in the equipment slot before you even enter the Water Temple.

  • Advanced

    Hookshot is adult Forest

The Hookshot in the graveyard is the first adult item and the reason Forest Temple is the first adult dungeon. Light Arrows come from Sheik in the Temple of Time after the six medallions, not from Ganon's tower.

  • Secrets

Song of Storms as both ages

Learn Song of Storms from Guru-Guru in the adult windmill, then play it as a child to drain the well for the Lens of Truth. Skip the Lens only if you already know the Shadow Temple's fake walls.

  • Secrets

    Biggoron Sword trading quest

The pocket egg in Kakariko starts a chain that ends at Biggoron on Death Mountain. The Giant's Knife from the same mountain breaks; Biggoron does not.

  • Bosses

    Dark Link hates the hammer

Put away Z-target and slash, or just use the Megaton Hammer. Din's Fire also ends the room if you would rather not learn his riposte on a Broken Giant's Knife.

  • Bosses

    Ganon's jump slash

Hold the Master Sword after the first phase and jump-slash the tail in the second. Light Arrows stun; they do not replace the sword for the final hit.
