A side-scrolling Dragon Quest: towns in a World Tree, gold for keys and magic, and a dwarf-elf war you walk through. Buy the better sword before the better armor.
Passwords are the save system — visit the guru often. Don't hoard keys; doors you skip cost more later. Magic is for bosses, the sword is for the walk.
Show the right item to the right guard. The World Tree is vertical — if a shop looks empty, you don't have the story item yet.
