Firaxis Games · 2K · 20–40 hrs

Difficulty

A 4X where district adjacency, era score, and a government plaza building matter more than the next settler. Multiplayer punishes a forward settle you cannot defend; single player punishes a campus with no mountains.

Tips

  • Start here

Settle on turn one unless the tile is cursed

Losing two turns walking to a 'better' tile is a settler you didn't build. Slinger first if you see a neighbor, builder first if you don't. Work the 2-food 2-production tiles before the pretty forest you cannot chop yet.

  • Start here

    District adjacency is the yield

Campuses want mountains, reefs, or geothermal; Holy Sites want woods and mountains; commercial hubs want a river. A campus in the open with a +1 is a district you placed for the era score, not for science.

  • Advanced

    Pingala vs Magnus

Pingala in the science city, Magnus in the chop city. Ancestral Hall in the Government Plaza if you are going wide, Audience Chamber if you are going tall. Don't chop a rainforest before you have a pantheon that wants it (Sacred Path).

  • Advanced

Era score is a golden age

A Golden Age is extra movement, extra yields, or Dedication bonuses that snowball. Pick a Dedication you can actually score (monuments, barb camps, wonders) instead of hoping the next civic unlocks a better one.

  • Secrets

    City-state suzerain bonuses

Kumasi, Auckland, Bologna, and a few others change a victory type more than a unique unit. Envoy math on the first three city-states you meet is the early game; don't spread one envoy each.

  • Multiplayer

    Don't forward settle a human

A forward settle without an army is a declaration of war you haven't sent. Scout the nearby players before you plant city three. In ranked, a surprise war at the medieval era is the game; walls and a crossbow are not optional flavor.
