The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

An open-world RPG about a Dragonborn drawn into a civil war and the return of the dragons.

Bethesda Game Studios · Bethesda Softworks · 80–120 hrs

Difficulty

The open-fantasy sandbox whose real build tools are smithing, enchanting, and standing stones. Main-quest shouts are a tour; the Aetherium forge, Black Star, and a legendary-skill loop are the long save.

Tips

  • Start here

Don't fast travel the first road

Walk the road to Whiterun at least once so the map fills with the camps the game wants you to find. Mage stone if you are playing spells, Warrior or Thief otherwise; you can swap at the Guardian Stones any time.

  • Start here

Smithing plus Enchanting is the curve

Improve the weapon, then enchant it, then wear Fortify Smithing gear and do it again. A legendary iron dagger with a matching enchant will outpace a raw Daedric you never improved.

  • Advanced

    Legendary skills keep the leveling

Reset a skill to 15 with Legendary once it hits 100 so the XP curve doesn't freeze. Atronach or Lord stone later in the game beats the Guardian Stones you picked in Helgen's shadow.

  • Advanced

    Become Ethereal for the fall

The Become Ethereal shout (Throat of the World / Greybeards) lets you drop off any cliff and ignore the landing. Use it to grab the Notched Pickaxe on the Throat without a reload.

  • Secrets

Black Star and Lost to the Ages

Azura's Star vs the Black Star is a soul-gem choice you should make on purpose. Lost to the Ages (Aetherium forge) is the best 'I never found this' quest in the DLC-era game.

  • Secrets

    Nightingale and the Paarthurnax dilemma

Nightingale armor from the Thieves Guild line is a stealth set the Dark Brotherhood will not give you. The Blades will ask you to kill Paarthurnax; that choice is permanent for the rest of the save.

  • Builds

One weapon school and one armor school

One-handed plus block plus heavy, or stealth plus archery plus light. A character that dabbles in Destruction, Conjuration, two-handed, and sneak at 30 each will feel underpowered in every dungeon.
